The Miami Dolphins will be the third AFC East team to select in the first round of the NFL draft. The Dolphins have the No. 12 overall pick in April.
Let’s take a look at the recent history of the No. 12 pick and what this means for Miami.
- 2012: Fletcher Cox, DT, Philadelphia Eagles
- 2011: Christian Ponder, QB, Minnesota Vikings
- 2010: Ryan Mathews, RB, San Diego Chargers
- 2009: Knowshon Moreno, RB, Denver Broncos
- 2008: Ryan Clady, OT, Denver Broncos
The No. 12 overall pick has been inconsistent the past five years. Only Clady has proven to be a franchise building block.
Miami has done well in the first round the past two years. The Dolphins landed quarterback Ryan Tannehill and center Mike Pouncey in 2012 and 2011, respectively. A pick of similar quality in 2013 would go a long way for the Dolphins.
Miami has several needs to address, such as wide receiver, cornerback and safety. The Dolphins also have five picks in the first three rounds.
