FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Are the New York Jets plotting another roster move at the quarterback position?
Rex Ryan, a guest Friday on ESPN Radio's Mike & Mike, hinted they might not stay with four quarterbacks for the remainder of the season. Ryan said he's "not 100 percent sure" if they'll keep four," adding, "We'll see how it plays out over the next few days."
This, of course, will fuel speculation about the immediate future of Mark Sanchez, who is rehabbing a shoulder injury. The Jets have been calling it a "day-to-day" injury, but that has never been the case. Sanchez is expected to miss at least a few weeks, sources said. Injured reserve could be a possibility.
On Wednesday, general manager John Idzik downplayed IR as an option.
"We're not looking at that," he said. "We're looking at Mark continuing his rehabbing. We said it's day-to-day. It's very unpredictable. Mark knows his body better than anybody else. He’s working very hard and so, hopefully, we’ll get him back here soon."
There also has been speculation about them releasing Sanchez and eating his $8.25 million salary, which is guaranteed. Owner Woody Johnson shot that down, saying, "Mark will be on the team, I don't think there's any question about that."
In case you've lost track, the Jets have Geno Smith at starter, with Matt Simms and Brady Quinn joining Sanchez on the bench. Quinn's $715,000 salary becomes guaranteed if he's on the roster at 4 p.m. Saturday.
