GM: Offense, playoff woes doomed Smith

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Chicago Bears general manager Phil Emery credited recently fired coach Lovie Smith for "defensive excellence" but divulged that ultimately, the decision to make a change at head coach came down to inconsistency on offense, and the club's inability to perennially advance to the postseason.
