  • The Cowboys visited with SMU defensive end Margus Hunt on Tuesday evening. Hunt is the tallest player here at 6-foot-8 and 278 pounds. He's still raw and learning the game. Did we tell you Hunt is a track guy? He throws discus and was recruited for his field events from Estonia, a country just west of Russia. But SMU doesn't have a track program, so he played football.

"So much to learn," Hunt said about the transition to football. "I have to pick it up faster than that, and I feel like I have done that the last three days. I'm getting better every day and not making the same mistakes."

Asked about potentially playing for the Cowboys, Hunt said, "We'll see how it will work out."

  • The Cowboys' front office insists a final decision hasn't been made regarding Jason Garrett's play-calling status. Jerry Jones didn't deny Garrett wouldn't call plays in 2013. Garrett's availability was limited this week to brief conversations with reporters because he was conducting interviews with assistant coaching candidates. Listening to Jones sometimes you get the feeling he's trying to protect Garrett from making people think he's getting demoted by losing the play-calling duties. David Dunn, Garrett's agent, declined to comment regarding what's been happening to his client or how he's been feeling about it. Dunn would only say that Garrett is keeping an even keel about everything.

  • Jones left the Senior Bowl on Wednesday afternoon, and while Garrett was still here, he missed both practice sessions while interviewing coaches for his vacant spots. It seemed strange not to see Garrett at the practices here, but Senior Bowl officials provide tape of all practices for the coaches and scouts to review each night.

  • If Jimmy Robinson doesn't return as wide receivers coach, he could remain on the staff in some capacity. Whomever the Cowboys find to replace Robinson's day-to-day duties, that coach has to deal with wide receiver Dez Bryant and make sure he's able to keep moving forward in his development. In the last two months of the season, Bryant was the Cowboys' best offensive weapon.

  • The arrest of nose tackle Jay Ratliff early Tuesday morning most likely will raise the awareness of finding some defensive line help in the draft. Leon Lett, the Cowboys' assistant defensive line coach, attended the practices here to check out the talent.
  • Calvin Watkins joined ESPNDallas.com in September 2009. He's covered the Cowboys since 2006 and also has covered colleges, boxing and high school sports.
