The Cowboys have finished 8-8 under Garrett in each of the last two seasons and missed the playoffs both years.

"I saw things about our head coach that really give me a lot of promise for not only 2013, but for years to come. I'm excited about Jason Garrett," Jones said. "I think we can take those kinds of positives, and Jason Garrett is certainly one of them from my evaluation, we can take the things that we have done very well and we can take the things we felt like we can do better, and that's what this offseason is about."

Garrett enters the third season of a four-year contract in 2013.

Jones also addressed the changes to the Cowboys' coaching staff in the offseason, which included six new hires, most notable being the addition of Monte Kiffin as defensive coordinator. Those changes, Jones said, were made by Garrett.

"He basically sat down and said 'Here's the kind of coach I want,' " Jones said. "He did the evaluation. He basically said, 'Jerry, here's who I want to get.' "

Several outgoing coaches had one year remaining on their contracts and some will still get paid by the Cowboys in 2013.

"When you go in and redo a coaching staff, certainly before the expiration stage of their contracts, it's a pretty expensive proposition to go in and do that," Jones said. "We're not just making these changes to have a new face on things out here. This was a change of commitment. We had to honor the commitments we had in the coaches, and all of that quite frankly (was) pretty expensive."
