Weigh to go: Martellus Bennett tips scales at 291
That’s not a good thing for the defending Super Bowl champions.
Giants tight ends coach Mike Pope told reporters that Bennett weighed in at 291 pounds last week. That’s a whopping 26 pounds higher than his listed weight.
“I think that is probably a little too big for his legs to carry,” Pope said.
Not coincidentally, Bennett isn’t participating in organized team activities because of a hamstring injury. That’s a heck of a way to make a first impression after signing a one-year, $2.5 million deal with a team desperate for tight ends after losing their top two players at the position to torn ACLs suffered in the Super Bowl.
Bennett, who failed to approach his potential at Texas A&M and with the Cowboys, has essentially eaten his way out of an opportunity to begin establishing a rapport with quarterback Eli Manning.
Bennett had a total of 846 receiving yards and four touchdowns in four seasons with the Cowboys, but he believes he’s capable of being a Pro Bowl tight end if he gets more opportunities. The opportunities are there for the taking with the Giants, but Bennett has apparently been the wrong kind of hungry since leaving Dallas.
To Bennett’s credit, his blocking consistently was praised by his Cowboys bosses, all of whom expected him to be a prolific pass-catcher when they used a second-round pick on him.
Owner/general manager Jerry Jones went so far as to say that Bennett could grow into a good left tackle. Judging by his weight, Marty B is well on his way.
