Jae Crowder

Age: 23 | Position: SF | Salary: $788,872

Role for Mavs in 2013-14: Crowder, who averaged 17.3 minutes per game as a rookie, should have a similar role in the rotation this season. He’s a rugged, relentless defender who doesn’t rebound as well as you’d want from a forward (2.4 per game last season) in part due to being undersized and limited athletically.

Crowder’s offensive contributions primarily come in catch-and-shoot situations. Hopefully, his jumper will have improved after an offseason of work. He shot 38.4 percent from the floor and 32.8 percent from 3-point range last season.

What happened this summer? Determined to improve his quickness and explosiveness, Crowder dropped about 15 pounds, following a strict diet and conditioning program. He averaged 13.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 2.2 steals for the Mavs’ summer league team.

What does the future hold? Crowder’s rookie contract includes a team option of $915,243. It’d be surprising if the Mavs don’t pick that up for a second-round pick who has proved he can be a decent role player.

Bottom line: Crowder was a solid second-round pick who should continue to contribute in a limited role.
