Wayne Ellington

Age: 25 | Position: SG | Salary: $2,652,000

Role for Mavs in 2013-14: Ellington will be a 3-and-D guy off the Mavs’ bench. His job is to space the floor on offense and defend well on the other end of the floor.

At 6-foot-4, 200 pounds, Ellington doesn’t have the size to guard small forwards who are scoring threats, but he’s an a good on-ball defender against shooting guards. That’s especially important considering that starting guards Jose Calderon and Monta Ellis didn’t arrive in Dallas with decent defensive reputations. Offensively, Ellington isn’t much of a creator, but he’s a catch-and-shoot threat who has hit 38.2 percent of his 3-point attempts in his career.

What happened this summer?: Ellington agreed to a two-year deal, $5.4 million deal, signing for the cap room midlevel exception. The Mavs are the former Minnesota first-round pick’s fourth team in a three-year span.

What does the future hold?: He fills a need in Dallas, but his contract could easily be included if the Mavs need pieces to make a trade.

Bottom line: Ellington should be a reasonably priced role player.
