With the IHSAA state tournament complete, the POWERADE state rankings are almost finalized. Once No. 1 La Lumiere finishes up its season at the NHSI tournament this week, we'll be able to lock in the final version of the rankings.

Carmel did everything it could to make a case for the top spot by winning the Class 4A state championship. The Greyhounds beat Pike, 80-67, in the title game to finish the season with a 23-4 record. A poor showing by La Lumiere at NHSI could leave the door open for Carmel to jump to No. 1 in the final rankings next week.

  2. Carmel (23-4) — Last week: No. 2

With the state championship games set for this weekend, we have a pretty clear view of the POWERADE state rankings. No. 1 La Lumiere is once again off for the week, but the rest of the Top 10 is made up of IHSAA teams, and most of them will be in action on Saturday.

No. 2 Carmel will take on No. 3 Pike for the Class 4A championship, while No. 4 Park Tudor will play No. 5 Bowman Academy for the Class 2A crown. In Class 3A, No. 8 Norwell and No. 10 Guerin Catholic will clash for the title.

The top team in Indiana doesn't participate in the IHSAA tournament, so La Lumiere hasn't taken the court in a while. But make no mistake, the No. 1 Lakers are still the state's premier squad. They will get a chance to compete for a national championship when they take part in the NHSI tournament at the end of the month.

Carmel remains the top-ranked team among IHSAA participants, checking in at No. 2 in this week's POWERADE state rankings. The Greyhounds will take on No. 4 Elkhart Memorial in the Class 4A semifinals.

The sectional playoffs turned out to be a minefield for the top teams in the state, as six of the teams from last week's POWERADE state rankings were knocked out and sent home for the season.

Former No. 1 Hamilton SE was one of the casualties, as was No. 4 North Central. Hamilton SE actually eliminated North Central in the first round, and the Royals were then themselves sent packing by Carmel.

La Lumiere is now the No. 1 team in the rankings, climbing up from No. 2 despite being inactive last week. As a non-IHSAA team, La Lumiere doesn't compete in the state tournament. The highest ranked state-eligible team is Pendleton Heights, which checks in at No. 2.

POWERADE State Basketball Rankings
  1. La Lumiere (25-2) — Last week: No. 2
  2. Pendleton Heights 21-2) — Last week: No. 3
  3. Carmel (19-4) — Last week: Not ranked

It's playoff time, and there are more than a handful of teams that could contend for Indiana state championships in each class.

Hamilton SE is the No. 1 team in the POWERADE state rankings and the front-runner for the Class 4A championship, but solid teams like No. 4 North Central, No. 8 Warren Central and No. 10 Arsenal Tech could pose legit challenges throughout the bracket.

  2. La Lumiere (25-2) — Last week: No. 2

While Hamilton SE made it through an uneventful week to remain at No. 1, there were major shakeups throughout the rest of the POWERADE state rankings.

La Lumiere, No. 7 last week, jumps all the way up to No. 2 after adding two more solid wins last week. North Central slips one spot to No. 4 despite also going 2-0 last week. The other big mover is Pendleton Heights, which climbs to No. 4 this week after a blowout win over Frankton.

Hamilton SE remains at No. 1 in this week's edition of the POWERADE state rankings, but it wasn't easy for the Royals. They trailed No. 8 Carmel by as much as seven points in the second half before rallying for a 58-56 win. The close call keeps No. 2 Homestead at bay for now. Undefeated Homestead had a fairly routine week, winning its lone game by a 75-65 score over Norwell.

Muncie Central vaulted to No. 1 a few weeks ago, but a rocky stretch has knocked the Bearcats out of the POWERADE state rankings. The latest setback was a 68-64 loss to Pendleton Heights, which used the win to catapult into the No. 10 spot.

Hamilton SE remains at No. 1 after a pair of convincing wins, while Homestead and North Central follow at No. 2 and No. 3.

  2. Homestead (17-0) — Last week: No. 2

Not even an injury to their star player could slow down the Hamilton SE Royals last week. Senior guard Gary Harris (21.1 points per game) was forced to miss the team's lone contest last week, reportedly due to a strained groin, but the No. 1 Royals kept rolling with an easy 79-33 win over McCutcheon.

Homestead is also holding steady at No. 2, while North Central made a huge statement by overcoming a big fourth-quarter deficit to defeat then-No. 6 Warren Central.

Hamilton SE remains at No. 1 in the POWERADE state rankings, but it wasn't easy. The Royals had to put in some serious work in a 50-47 win over Fishers, and the schedule doesn't get much easier the rest of the way. Games with Bowman Academy (Feb. 3) and Pike (Feb. 14) remain, and both teams could prove to be significant hurdles.

Hamilton SE remains at No. 1 in this week's POWERADE state rankings, as the Royals took care of business without much of a problem. The rest of the Top 10 wasn't so lucky.

The No. 2 and 3 teams from last week both suffered defeats, allowing Muncie Central (10-1) to jump back up to the second spot. Muncie Central was No. 1 as recently as two weeks ago, but a head-to-head loss to Hamilton SE dropped them down the rankings.

There is one new team in the rankings this week, as Broad Ripple pops into the No. 9 spot. Lawrence Central, No. 8 a week ago, drops out after losing to North Central.

After yet another 1 vs. 2 matchup in a season full of them so far, Hamilton SE defeated previously unbeaten Muncie Central to earn the top spot in the POWERADE state rankings.

Senior guard Gary Harris played like the superstar he is, pouring in 30 points and five rebounds to lead the Royals to the 60-51 win. Harris, a Michigan State recruit, threw down five dunks in the game, simply taking over whenever Hamilton SE was challenged.

The loss knocks Muncie Central from No. 1 to No. 4, behind No. 2 Roncalli and No. 3 Park Tudor.

Muncie Central remains atop the POWERADE state rankings after dropping No. 10 Pike, 69-61, on Dec. 28. The Bearcats' frontcourt was dominant against Pike, as senior forward Nick Osborne posted 23 points and 12 rebounds in the win. Junior forward Travis Woods was right behind with 19 points.

Hamilton SE was the big winner last week, winning a rematch with North Central to vault from No. 5 to No. 2 in this week's rankings. North Central won the first meeting two weeks ago, and they may still play again before the season is over.

With all of the top teams from the preseason POWERADE Indiana rankings suffering at least one loss so far, there are two new entries atop the board this week. Muncie Central is locked into the No. 1 spot with a 7-0 record, while Roncalli has jumped all the way to the No. 2 spot. Park Tudor, at 5-1, is entrenched at No. 3. Hamilton SE, last week's No. 1 team, has dropped to No. 4 after back-to-back tight losses to North Central and Lawrence Central.

There have been some major changes since the preseason POWERADE state rankings were released, including a new team atop the Indiana board. North Central opened at No. 1, but a loss to Carmel dropped the Panthers to No. 2. That gave Hamilton SE a chance to move up, and the Royals claimed the No. 1 spot by going 4-0 through the early part of the season. The stay at the top could be short-lived, however, as Hamilton SE and North Central are scheduled to meet on Dec. 17.

Carmel, the team that beat North Central on Dec. 9, jumps from being unranked to No. 3. The Greyhounds have a legitimate claim to the No. 2 spot, having beat North Central head-to-head, but Carmel also has a loss to Noblesville on its resume.
