With the state tournaments wrapped up, there isn't much room for debate in the final edition of the 2011-12 POWERADE state rankings. St. Mark's was the preseason No. 1 pick, and the Lions held on to the top spot by going 27-2 and winning the NEPSAC AA tournament.

Springfield Central was unranked to begin the season, but made up ground by going 22-1 and claiming the Division 1 state championship with a 67-46 win over No. 4 Brockton. Northfield-Mt. Hermon started the season at No. 2 and finished at No. 3 after locking up the NEPSAC AAA crown. St. John's (Shrewsbury) and Mahar were both outside the Top 10 when the season started, but they climbed to No. 5 and No. 6, respectively. Mahar won the Division 2 championship.

Looking ahead to next year, both St. Mark's and Northfield-Mt. Hermon will lose a significant amount of talent to graduation, but they should be able to re-stock and build around the players that are returning, like junior forward Anthony Dallier (NMH) and freshman forward Aaron Falzon (St. Mark's).

The state tournament wreaked havoc on this week's edition of the POWERADE state rankings, with five of last week's top 10 squads seeing their seasons come to an end.

There is stability at the top, however, as St. Mark's remains at No. 1 after winning the NEPSAC AA title two weeks ago. Springfield Central is the top MIAA team, checking in at No. 2. Central will take on No. 5 St. John's (Shrewsbury) in the Division 1 semifinals, with the winner of that game advancing to face No. 4 Brockton in the state title contest.

As MIAA teams get deeper and deeper into the postseason, a pair of non-MIAA schools have already clinched impressive championships. No. 1 St. Mark's won the NEPSAC AA title, while Northfield-Mt. Hermon claimed the NEPSAC AAA crown.

The win keeps St. Mark's locked into the No. 1 spot, while NMH's takedown of Brewster Academy (N.H.) in the AAA final helps the Hoggers jump from No. 7 to No. 4 in this week's POWERADE state rankings.

In MIAA tourney action, No. 2 Springfield Central still looks like the favorite to come out of WMass, while No. 3 Charlestown and No. 5 Central Catholic are on a collision course in the Division 1 North bracket.

  2. Springfield Central (20-1) — Last week: No. 2

The MIAA tournament is underway, so in essence every team in the field is starting over with a record of 0-0. But some teams, like No. 2 Springfield Central and No. 3 Charlestown are entering the postseason on a roll. Others, like No. 5 Brockton and No. 10 Catholic Memorial, have stumbled late and must recover before their next loss ends their season.

In the NEPSAC tournament, No. 1 St. Mark's continues to dominate and looks like a good bet to earn a rematch with the Tilton School (N.H.), which beat the Lions in last year's Class AA title game.

Springfield Central continues its steady climb up the POWERADE state rankings, as the Golden Eagles now reside at No. 2 after dispatching rival Springfield Commerce last week.

The other big news concerns the team Springfield Central replaced in the No. 2 spot - Brockton. The Boxers had won 15 straight, but they played poorly in a 68-50 loss to Charlestown in the finals of the Comcast Tournament. Brockton shot just 9-for-22 from the free throw line in the loss and dropped to No. 6 as a result.

It was another hectic week for the Massachusetts POWERADE state rankings, with major shake-ups throughout the top 10. Last week's No. 2 team, Northfield-Mt. Hermon (which actually held the top spot earlier in the season), lost to Brewster Academy, dropping the Hoggers down to No. 4 this week.

Former No. 3 Catholic Memorial also suffered a setback, dropping a heartbreaking game to Brockton at the buzzer. Brockton moves from No. 6 to No. 2 with the win, while CM falls to No. 6 this week.

Western Mass power Springfield Central also reaches its highest point so far this season, checking in at No. 3 after downing Springfield Cathedral.

Central Catholic had been one of the last undefeated teams in the MIAA, but an upset loss to Lowell dropped the Raiders from No. 3 to No. 7 in this week's POWERADE state rankings. Catholic Memorial jumps into the No. 3 spot, behind No. 1 St. Mark's and No. 2 Northfield-Mt. Hermon.

The No. 1 team in the Massachusetts POWERADE state rankings didn't play last week, with St. Mark's taking the week off, but the No. 2 team had no such luck.

Northfield-Mt. Hermon not only played - the Hoggers had to take on Tilton (N.H.), which features one of the nation's top players in junior center Nerlens Noel. The No. 2 player in the ESPNU Super 60, Noel led Tilton over NMH, 87-66. Because the loss came to an out-of-state opponent, it won't affect Northfield's ranking too much going forward.

The biggest game of the last week took place in Worcester on Friday night, as rivals St. Peter-Marian and Holy Name met for the second time this season. Holy Name had won the first meeting by a single point, but St. Peter-Marian got its revenge this time around, storming back from an 18-point deficit in the second half to force overtime before coming away with an 85-83 victory.

On the strength of that win, SPM jumps from No. 9 to No. 6 in this week's POWERADE state rankings, while Holy Name drops from No. 7 to No. 9.

The Massachusetts POWERADE state rankings have been volatile so far this season, and this week's edition is no exception. Four teams dropped out of the top 10, while several others lost games but managed to hold onto a spot in the rankings. One team, Wilbraham & Monson, even found a way to move up despite losing a game.

St. Mark's holds on to the No. 1 spot after a convincing win over Friends' Central (Pa.) at the Hoophall Classic, and Northfield-Mt. Hermon remains solidly locked into the No. 2 spot after beating a solid St. Thomas More (Conn.) team.

Catholic Memorial is the highest-ranked of the four new teams in this week's rankings, as the Knights check in at No. 5 after upset wins over BC High and St. John's Prep.

There's a new team atop the Massachusetts POWERADE state rankings this week, as former No. 1 Northfield-Mt. Hermon suffered its first loss of the season. The Hoggers dropped a 92-82 decision to the South Kent School (Conn.), and while the loss was technically out-of-state, it opened the door for St. Mark's to ascend to the top spot.

St. Mark's has lost two games, but they were both to out-of-state teams as well. And the Lions beat a good Milton Academy squad last week to earn their way to the top of the board.

St. John's Prep was upset by BC High, but the Prep only drops one spot, from No. 3 to No. 4. That's mostly because SJP has a head-to-head win over No. 5 New Mission from earlier this season.

  1. St. Mark's (8-2) — Last week: No. 2
  2. Northfield-Mt. Hermon (7-1) — Last week: No. 1
  3. Central Catholic (7-0) — Last week: No. 4

It was a fairly slow week for the top team in the Massachusetts POWERADE FAB 50 state rankings, as Northfield-Mt. Hermon was inactive. But there was still plenty of action throughout the rest of the rankings.

St. John's Prep jumped from No. 7 all the way up to No. 3 on the strength of two impressive victories, while Holy Name went from unranked to No. 7.

As teams get back to full schedules after the holidays, look for more movement in next week's rankings.

St. Mark's opened the season at No. 1 in the state rankings, but a loss to familiar foe Tilton (N.H.) has dropped the Lions to No. 2, behind powerhouse Northfield-Mt. Hermon (10-0). Central Catholic remains the top MIAA-eligible team in the state, with a 3-0 record.

MIAA basketball action is just beginning, but many of the state's top prep schools are already into their regular season schedules. No. 1 St. Mark's has a couple of impressive wins on its resume, as does No. 2 Northfield-Mt. Hermon, and both teams have solidified their spots atop the POWERADE state rankings.

Look for more movement in the rankings once everyone is playing games. For now, there is only one minor change from the preseason rankings, as Wilbraham a Monson and Worcester Academy have flipped in the 5-6 spots.

St. Mark's is familiar with being ranked No. 1 in the POWERADE state rankings, just like the Lions are used to housing the best player in Massachusetts. The latest super-prospect to come from St. Mark's is senior center Kaleb Tarczewski, a 7-footer who is ranked No. 6 in the ESPNU 100. If that's not enough, the Lions have additional firepower in the form of shooting guard Nik Stauskas, a native Canadian who checks in at No. 83 in the ESPNU 100. Together, they have St. Mark's in the top spot of the just-released preseason state rankings.
