EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Safety Kenny Phillips has a sprained MCL in his right knee and is considered “week to week” by the Giants.

Phillips likely will miss Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns, and could be out longer than that. Offensive tackle David Diehl has missed the past two games due to an MCL injury, and coach Tom Coughlin said the two injuries are similar.

There also wasn't any encouraging news Monday regarding wide receiver Hakeem Nicks. Nicks missed the loss to the Eagles with swelling in his knee and pain in his surgically repaired foot.

Nicks has not played since the win over Tampa Bay in Week 2. He was held out of the Giants’ ensuing game, a win at Carolina, because of the quick turnaround for that Thursday night game. But after taking some time off, Nicks experienced swelling in his knee last week after his lone practice on Thursday, and the Giants downgraded him to out on Saturday.

When asked how concerned he is about Nicks’ health, Coughlin replied, “How much concern can I show you?”

Coughlin said Nicks’ knee issue, something that first popped up when he banged his knee late in the fourth quarter against the Buccaneers, flared up after he ran last week following the extended rest he had.

When asked if Nicks’ knee improved at all over the weekend, Coughlin said, “Not that I know of.”

The Giants did get safety Tyler Sash back Monday from suspension for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing substance rules. The team can certainly use Sash, with Phillips and other secondary players banged up, including cornerback Jayron Hosley (hamstring), safety Antrel Rolle (knee), cornerback Michael Coe (hamstring) and cornerback Corey Webster (hand).

Rolle said he came out of the Eagles game feeling about the way he felt going in. Ahmad Bradshaw said his neck feels fine and he did not feel any pain after the loss.

Coughlin also said that center David Baas' snaps were affected by a swollen hand.
