Inconsistency defined the Giants 2012 season.

So while the Giants put up some big numbers offensively, it was more about the timing of when those stats were compiled. Also the defense put up some conflicting stats that indicate how inconsistent the unit was. Giants.com writer Mike Eisen compiled some interesting numbers from the 2012 season. Here's a look at some of them:

The Giants scored 429 points, the second-highest in franchise history behind the 448 scored by the 1963 Giants. The 429 points was 35 points more than they scored during the 2011 regular season.

The offense gained 5,687 yards, down 474 yards from the franchise-record 6,161 yards the 2011 Giants racked up. The Giants fell from eighth in total offense (385.1 yards a game) to 14th (355.4).

The Giants scored 47 touchdowns for the second straight season. But they kicked 33 field goals, 14 more than they did in 2011. Again, it is all about when the points came. Timing is everything.

This past season was the fifth time in the team's 88-year history in which the Giants scored more than 400 points. And for as much grief as Tom Coughlin and his coaching staff seems to get from fans, the head coach has overseen four of those five 400-point scoring seasons (2005, 2008, 2009, and 2012).

A major reason for the Giants' failed title defense was the defense. The Giants allowed 6,134 yards for an average of 383.4 yards a game. Both were franchise records. In 2011, the defense surrendered 6,022 yards. The past two seasons are the only seasons in which the Giants have allowed 6,000 yards.

The Giants finished the season ranked 31st in the NFL in total defense. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, it is the first time the Giants’ defense was ranked second-to-last since 1966.

The big play killed the Giants defense. It allowed 60 passes of 20 or more yards (fourth highest in the NFL) and a league-high 29 passes of at least 30 yards and 13 passes of 40 or more yards -- second most in the NFL.

And yet despite all the yardage, the Giants surrendered 344 points which tied them for 12th in scoring defense. The Giants defense excelled in the red zone, allowing only 23 touchdowns on 50 opposing possessions in the red zone -- sixth-best in the NFL.

And the Giants were fourth in the NFL in both takeaways (35) and turnover differential (plus-14). The plus-14 is the Giants’ best turnover differential since 1997 when they were plus-25. The Giants' 21 interceptions were their most since 1997.

• • • Steve Weatherford didn't have to punt a ton. He punted 58 times in 2012, the Giants' lowest total ever in a 16-game season. That doesn't mean Weatherford didn't do some damage. His gross punting average of 47.5 yards (eighth in the NFL) was the highest single-season average by a Giants punter with at least 35 kicks. Don Chandler held the previous high of 46.6 yards in 1959.

Rookie David Wilson compiled 1,925 all-purpose yards -- the most ever by a Giants rookie and the most by any Giant since Tiki Barber had 2,127 in 2006. However, Tampa Bay rookie Doug Martin, selected one spot ahead of Wilson in the draft, also had one more all-purpose yard than Wilson with 1,926 total yards.

Stevie Brown's eight interceptions were the most by a Giant in 44 years. And his five returns of more than 40 yards were the highest total since Baltimore’s Ed Reed had five in 2004.

Eli Manning completed 59.9 percent of his passes in 2012, increasing his career percentage to 58.60. That moves him into first place on the franchise's all-time list past Kerry Collins (58.51) .

The Giants were the only NFL team with three different players with a 100-yard rushing game this season. Ahmad Bradshaw, Andre Brown and Wilson all rushed for at least 100 yards in a game.

Victor Cruz’s 86 receptions were the second-most in Giants history behind Steve Smith and his 107 catches in 2009.
