As the NFL scouting combine continues, let’s take a look at some of the recent mock drafts.
Today, we take a look at ESPN NFL draft analyst Todd McShay’s most recent mock draft earlier this month and who he thinks the Giants might take at 19th overall.
Alec Ogletree, LB, Georgia
McShay’s take: The Giants could also address needs at offensive tackle, cornerback, tight end or defensive end here, but if Ogletree's character checks out he is a steal this late in the first round. He is one of the best pound-for-pound athletes in the class and has the range to chase plays from sideline to sideline.
Giants analysis: It remains to be seen whether Ogletree, who converted from safety to linebacker, will be there at 19. And if so, would the Giants take a risk on a player who comes with this much off-the-field baggage? Ogletree was recently charged with DUI in Arizona and was reportedly suspended four games in 2012 at Georgia for failed drug tests. He also was arrested and charged with theft as a freshman at Georgia. The Giants will do their due diligence. But besides all the off-the-field issues, the Giants don’t spend first-round picks on linebackers. They haven’t taken a linebacker in the first round since drafting Carl Banks out of Michigan State in 1984. So even though they definitely can use an athletic young stud linebacker, the Giants could go with a defensive lineman (they can use a pass rusher and defensive tackle) or offensive lineman at 19 and address linebacker by perhaps re-signing free agents Chase Blackburn and Keith Rivers on the cheap while possibly drafting another linebacker later in the draft.
What they’re saying: “I’m a good person at heart,” Ogletree said of his recent DUI at the combine. “Everybody makes mistakes. I feel real bad about the situation. Everybody makes mistakes. It was a bad decision at the time. But like I said, I talked to the teams and we had good discussions about it.”
Tell us if you want to see the Giants draft Ogletree at 19.
