Giants backup quarterback David Carr will test free agency and see what other opportunities are available, a source confirmed.

Carr, the former top overall pick in the 2002 draft, has backed up Eli Manning for the past two seasons. Carr provided the Giants with an experienced backup who knows the Giants' offense and helped with the scout team as well.

But Carr may want to look for an opportunity that might provide a chance to play somewhere. The Giants signed former Colts backup Curtis Painter to a reserve/future contract this offseason and they might have to look to sign another veteran backup on the cheap in free agency if Carr signs elsewhere. Or the Giants might want to consider drafting a quarterback to develop with one of their late draft picks.

The idea of developing a young quarterback behind Manning is something the Giants might want to start thinking about sooner or later. But having a veteran to work with Manning and provide experience is key as well.
