NEW YORK -- Right guard Chris Snee has been talking to good friend and teammate Kevin Boothe.
He wants the free agent left guard back but Boothe remains unsigned and the wait has been "tough." The Giants need to free up more cap space and Snee said he would be willing to restructure his deal if asked by the Giants.
Snee is due to make $6.7 million in base salary this season and has two years remaining on his contract.
"They haven’t (asked) but I’ve restructured in the past," said Snee, who passed out food at a Boost Mobile 'Shrink Hunger' event with City Harvest and Korilla BBQ in Harlem. "I am a team player, I will do whatever necessary. At this point in your career, you want to win championships. I will do whatever it takes."
Snee said this one day after Eli Manning said he would be willing to consider restructuring or extending his deal as well if it helped the Giants sign guys like Victor Cruz, a restricted free agent, and Boothe to long-term deals.
Boothe is a key player for the Giants. He was solid as a starter last season for the Giants and his versatility is an asset since he can play both guard and center.
"I’ve been talking with Kevin, and I mean, it’s tough," Snee said. "Kevin is a good friend of mine and obviously I want him back. I think he’s a great player. He’s been very important to us the past couple years. But that’s not my decision to make, and I know Jerry Reese will put the best team out there he can. I hope it’s with Kevin Boothe."
"He’s not signed yet ... so I am concerned, but it’s out of my hands," Snee added. "The best I can do is just to be there for him as a friend and if he happens to move on, he’ll be a great addition to whatever team he goes to."
Reese recently said in an interview with SiriusXM NFL radio that the Giants will "have a good player at" left guard this season and raised the possibility of drafting an offensive lineman or starting a veteran like David Diehl at guard.
"It will be interesting to see how that works out for us," Reese said earlier this week. "Who knows, there are some possibilities for us in the draft. I think we can line up and play with some of the veterans we have right now but we will see how things goes. I am not sure who will play right now but we will have a good player at that position."
Snee recovering: Snee said his hip is feeling "great" after surgery in the offseason to repair a nagging injury.
"I’m only a month out of surgery but I haven’t had this motion in my hips in probably 5 years," Snee said. "So I’m excited and looking forward to starting workouts here in April then training camp in August."
Snee said he will be ready for training camp later this summer.
"The way I feel now, I don’t see any reason why I shouldn’t be," he said. "Listen, this is my 10th year. If it was a long-term recovery, I would have had the surgery right away. But I knew the timetable of recovery and I knew that I had some stuff I wanted to do with my kids before I was on crutches for a month, so I’ll be ready."
