EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The Giants hit the practice field for the first time on Saturday in front of a nice crowd at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center. Here's some of the highlights from the first day of action, including a look at the first team units.

OFFENSE: David Diehl took first team reps at right tackle on Saturday, while first-round draft pick Justin Pugh worked with the second unit. With Chris Snee starting on the the physically unable to perform list, James Brewer filled in as the right guard. Brandon Myers started as the tight end, and David Wilson served as the running back. Bear Pascoe was used as the fullback, as regular starter Henry Hynoski is on the PUP list.

LINEBACKER: Linebacker will be one of the biggest position battles this summer, as the team doesn't have anyone penciled into a job. Keith Rivers, Spencer Paysinger and Mark Herzlich served as the first team unit on Saturday, with Herzlich in the middle. Aaron Curry, Jacquian Williams and Dan Connor were the second team.

DEFENSIVE LINE: At defensive tackle, another position sure to be hotly contested, Cullen Jenkins, the team's biggest offseason acquisition, started alongside Linval Joseph. Rookie Johnathan Hankins and veteran Shaun Rogers were the second string defensive tackles. At end, Justin Tuck and Mathias Kiwanuka were the starters, while rookie Damontre Moore and Adrian Tracy were the backups.

SECONDARY: Corey Webster and Prince Amukamara were on the outside, while Antrel Rolle and Stevie Brown started at safety. Ryan Mundy and Tyler Sash were the second string safeties, while Will Hill, who will miss the first four games, has slipped down the chart. It appeared Trumaine McBride has passed last year's third-round pick Jayron Hosley on the cornerback depth chart.

PUNT RETURN: Receiver Rueben Randle got the first crack at punt returns, followed by Jerrel Jernigan. David Wilson also took some reps, but that's likely just in case the team needs him.

FLASHES: Hakeem Nicks ran his routes well and caught some passes. ... Rookie quarterback Ryan Nassib looked comfortable executing rollouts. ... Amukamara had a nice interception against Manning on an overthrown ball intended for Randle. ... Paysinger made a nice play to knock the ball out of Myers' hands on a short pass. ... Rookie running back Michael Cox flashed some nice moves. ... Manning looked sharp running the two-minute drill. ... Ramses Barden made several catches.
