There was a lot of speculaton leading into the draft that the Jets were going to select Syracuse DE/OLB Chandler Jones with the 16th pick.
Jones thought so, too.
In an interview Friday night on WBZ-TV in Boston, Jones -- picked by the Patriots at 21 after a trade-up -- said he thought the Jets were poised to take him. He said things started to heat up in the middle of the first round.
Per Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com, Jones said, "Around 15 through 20. My agent was telling me, 'The Jets are getting ready to get you. The Jets called me. They're going to draft you.' So I am sitting here waiting. They were still on the clock and my phone didn't ring.'"
The Jets, of course, selected DE Quinton Coples. The Patriots moved up for Jones. Considering the similar positions and intensity of the rivalry, the Coples-Jones comparison should exist for years.
A similar situation unfolded in 2010, when the Patriots picked CB Devin McCourty at 27 and the Jets took CB Kyle Wilson at 29. At the time, the Jets said they had Wilson rated ahead of McCourty, but we've since come to find out that it was close and wouldn't have been a cut-and-dried decision.
