Mike Woodson said before the Hawks game on Sunday night that Jason Kidd will play -- and start -- against the Hawks.

On Saturday night, during the fourth quarter against the 76ers, Kidd went back to the locker room to receive treatment on his balky back. He played a season-low 14 minutes.

Woodson went with the same starting five as last night: Raymond Felton, Kidd, Iman Shumpert, Carmelo Anthony and Tyson Chandler.

STAT'S GOOD D: For the second straight game, Amar'e Stoudemire had a strong defensive game. After finishing with two blocks and nine rebounds against the Celtics on Thursday night, he had a block and steal against the Sixers on Saturday. He banged well against Philly's bigs and was aggressive going after the ball.

"I think he's doing OK there, too," Woodson said of the power forward's defense. "I just haven't played him a lot of minutes."

CHANGE OF PACE: Woodson said that eventually Felton, Kidd and Shumpert will help the team get into their offense quicker and more efficiently.

"When you go back to Detroit when we had 'Rook' back, that was pretty promising," he said. "I thought our defense was a lot of better. ... I think once those guys, Raymond, get a little more conditioning under his belt, we'll hopefully be able to get back to pushing it and being able to get our halfcourt offense ticking again."

WHAT'S UP WITH J.R.?: "I wish I knew," the coach said of J.R. Smith, who's missed 21 of his last 24 shots.

After the Sixers game, Smith said he's been over-thinking on the court. Woodson said he wasn't aware the sixth man had said that, but he talked about other ways the team needs to pick him up.

"We've got to practice and help him through," he said. "I mean, that's the only way you get out of a slump, especially when you're a guy that scores the basketball. It happens to us all as players. We all go through it, so he's just got to put more time in and work his way through it."
