Joe Camporeale/USA TODAY SportsMike Woodson isn't just going to hand the Big Apple to the Nets.Don't be so fast to crown the Nets as the kings of New York, Mike Woodson says.
“Bottom line is we still have to play the games," Woodson told reporters Wednesday in Las Vegas. “Same thing happened last year. People picked us fourth, fifth in our division and we ended up winning our division. Nothing is guaranteed. I like the moves [the Nets] made because Paul [Pierce] and Kevin [Garnett] are two big pieces that can still play. But I like our team. I like we got [Andrea] Bargnani and Pablo [Prigioni] and making sure J.R. [Smith] stays here as well.
“I like the Nets' moves. but I like our moves, too. Only time will tell. We got to play it out."
The Knicks have re-signed Prigioni and Smith and obtained Bargnani in a trade with the Raptors this summer.
The Nets have made splashier offseason moves, though, adding Pierce and Garnett via a trade with the Celtics (along with Jason Terry) and signing Andrei Kirilenko.
Woodson's Knicks finished in second place in the Eastern Conference last season. Many are predicting they will finish fifth this season due to moves made by Indiana (re-signing David West), Chicago (adding a healthy Derrick Rose) and Brooklyn.
Woodson says he isn't worried about preseason predictions, though.
“Nobody picked us to do a whole lot of anything at the start. We got a lot of things accomplished," he said. "Sure, we fell short, but we set the table."
NO SURGERY FOR MELO: Woodson confirmed that Carmelo Anthony will not need surgery to repair a small tear in his shoulder. Had he undergone surgery, Anthony may have been sidelined for the beginning of the regular season. Anthony suffered the injury late in the regular season and he later said that it hampered him throughout the playoffs.
Anthony and GM Glen Grunwald had previously said that surgery would not be necessary.
