HISTORY
Year Opened: 1923 | Field Surface: Natural Grass
East Lansing offers a natural beauty in which a stadium seems to have been meticulously placed. One of the true scenic venues in college football, Spartan Stadium offers up its serenity on Saturdays to tens of thousands of green-clad spectators.
Home can go by many names and still remain home. Such is the case with Spartan Stadium. Opening its doors in 1923, the facility was called College Field, Macklin Field and Macklin Stadium before serving the university, its athletics and the city as Spartan Stadium starting in 1956.
In 2002 Spartans fans saw the return of natural grass after a 33-year absence. The sod is a combination of nine different types of Kentucky bluegrass and earned Field of the Year honors from the Sports Turf Managers Association in 2005.
TRADITIONS
While football has been the staple at Spartan Stadium, hockey plays a significant roll in the world of Michigan State athletics. Combine the two and it's sure to draw a crowd. Such was the case in October 2001, when the top-ranked Spartans hosted No. 4 Michigan at Spartan Stadium and a then world-record crowd of 74,554 hockey fans watched the teams skate to a 3-3 tie. "The Cold War," as the tilt was dubbed, sparked a wave of outdoor hockey games staged at big stadiums that continues each season.
