HISTORY

Year Opened: 2009 | Field Surface: Artificial Turf

Back on campus and outdoors for the first time in 27 seasons, Minnesota opened TCF Stadium on Sept. 12, 2009, with a 20-13 win against Air Force. The Gophers had split their home-field advantage with the NFL's Vikings from 1982-2008, playing in the Metrodome on Saturdays.

The Gophers began their storied football tradition at Northrop Field defeating Hamline University 4-0 on Sept. 29, 1882. Some eight years later Minnesota would host a Wisconsin team and win 63-0. The outcome of that game might be lost on many, but the battle initiated what has become the longest running rivalry in Division I-A college football. The Gophers and Badgers have combined to play a total of 117 games, with 1906 being the only year they haven't squared off since 1890.

Minnesota may get lost in the shuffle of Big Ten powerhouses these days, but an earlier rise to dominance was perhaps best personified during their days playing in Memorial Stadium. The on-campus home of the Gophers from 1924 to 1981 sat just a block away from where TCF Bank Stadium sits today.

Memorial Stadium was the home of three consecutive national champion Gophers squads starting in 1934 and two more in 1940-41. The rarified feat of three-straight titles has not been accomplished again in college football. Minnesota would claim its sixth national title with Memorial Stadium as its home in 1960.

The 2009 move back to campus was one that resonated with alumni and students alike. TCF Stadium was built to accommodate more than 50,000 football followers; however, the design of the stadium is such that it would allow for a potential expansion of up to 80,000.

TCF Stadium was called in for backup for a Vikings home game in December 2010 after the inflatable roof of the Metrodome collapsed and forced the Purple People Eaters to find new accommodations.

TRADITIONS

TCF Stadium is the first stadium built in the Big Ten since 1960.

It was designed to take advantage of the breathtaking Minneapolis skyline and enhance the fan's experience while at the game. In homage to the historical, on-campus Memorial Stadium, the brick facade and arches were constructed to replicate the home site of the Gophers' half-dozen national champion teams.
