HISTORY
Year Opened: 1980 | Field Surface: Artificial Turf
In the late 1970s, Syracuse needed to upgrade its facilities in order to remain in Division I as concrete Archbold Stadium sat just 26,000 and was out of date. The end result was the Carrier Dome, the largest domed stadium on any college campus in the country. It opened in September 1980.
In addition to hosting the Orange football team, the "Loud House" is home to Syracuse's basketball and lacrosse teams and has hosted numerous rounds of NCAA championships in those sports.
The dome has been upgraded several times since opening; the fiberglass inflatable roof was replaced in 1999. In October 2009, the field was dedicated to former Syracuse running back Ernie Davis, the first African-American Heisman Trophy winner (1961).
TRADITIONS
Syracuse retired the number 44 on Nov. 12, 2005, to honor its great history of legendary backs, as well as the school's zip code 13244. The No. 44 was worn at Syracuse by Hall of Famers Jim Brown, Davis and Floyd Little. Davis was set to join Brown in the Cleveland Browns backfield. But Davis was diagnosed with acute leukemia in 1962 and died in 1963, never having played pro football. There have been attempts to restore the No. 44 as a recruiting tool and because of its significance to the community.
The nickname Orange is a gender-neutral moniker that was adopted in 2004 from Orangemen and Orangewomen. Otto the Orange is a fuzzy mascot with a large blue hat and matching pants that was adopted by the school in 1995. The original Syracuse mascot was the Saltine Warrior, a Native American figure named Big Chief Bill Orange. The Saltine Warrior was discontinued in 1978 as Syracuse became one of the first schools to stop using a stereotypical image of Native Americans. The school at one point tried to use a Roman gladiator as its mascot, but it was quickly nixed by poor reviews.
