HISTORY

Year Opened: 1953 | Field Surface: Artificial Turf

Reser Stadium opened as Parker Stadium in 1953, named after Charles Parker, a Portland businessman who was instrumental in helping raise funds for the venue. The name was changed in 1999 for OSU graduates Al and Pat Reser, owners of Reser Fine Foods. The couple made a seven-figure donation to the athletic department.

In even-numbered years, the stadium hosts the Civil War game with Oregon, which hosts in Eugene in odd-numbered years. The Civil War game started in 1894, then designated by the names "Oregon Classic" or "State Championship. " It was not called the Civil War until the 1930s.

Reser Stadium has undergone major renovations in recent years, raising capacity by 11,000, and is set to undergo another expansion, which will bring seating capacity to 55,000.

TRADITIONS

Oregon State's teams were initially known as the Aggies. Later, when they were outfitted with orange uniforms, they were dubbed the Orangemen. OSU was not recognized as the Beavers until after 1916, when the school yearbook was changed to "The Beaver." The costumed Benny Beaver made his first appearance as the school mascot in 1952.

As early as 1893 the university had a coyote named Jimmie as a mascot. In 1909, Oregon State started using a human as the mascot. John "Doc" Bell, a pastor and school regent, was said to often wear a beaver top hat. A live beaver named Bevo also was used for a short time in the early 1920s.
