HISTORY
Year Opened: 1968 | Field Surface: Artificial Turf
Legendary stadium names many times are associated with gracious donors or well-known alumni. And then there are those that carry the name of a legendary coach who created a culture that impacted the football program and the football tradition at its university. Yet rarely is that same coach patrolling the sidelines on Saturdays during football season.
Such is the case at Kansas State. Bill Snyder heads the Wildcats' football program, and has now for 20 years, and it is here in Manhattan where 50,000-seat Bill Snyder Family Stadium stands as an intimidating menace for visiting teams.
Then known as KSU Stadium, the facility opened its doors Sept. 21, 1968, to a 21-0 win over Colorado State. The largest crowd to witness a game here took place against what was once a long-time conference foe in Nebraska. A crowd of 53,811 screaming Wildcats fans seemingly willed their team to a remarkable 29-28 victory on Nov. 11, 2000.
Bill Snyder took the reigns of a program that was on a dismal 0-26-1 streak upon his arrival in 1989. He would go on to work wonders, when, from 1997 to 2003, the Wildcats became one of only four schools in the history of collegiate football to post 11 victories in six of seven seasons. Manhattan may be a quaint college town, but Snyder had turned the program into a feared powerhouse.
Snyder left the game in 2005 after 17 years at the helm. At that point the stadium was renamed after him and his family in recognition of his coaching performance and the impact he and his family made on the community of Manhattan. Feeling the itch in 2009 to coach once more, Snyder returned to the sidelines, where he remains.
TRADITIONS
During his time at Kansas State, Snyder garnered six National Coach of the Year awards and five Conference Coach of the Year awards. At the conclusion of the 2010 season he ranked 12th amongst active FBS coaches in wins, at which time he had coached nine consensus first-team All-American players, 47 All-Americans in total, 72 first-team All-Conference players and 97 first-team Academic All-Conference players.
Coach Snyder helped create the K-State Powercat logo that is seen on the team's helmets and virtually every piece of equipment, apparel and everything else associated with the Wildcats. The logo was introduced by Snyder early in his tenure to reflect the attitude of the team and the university. With Snyder's input, Manhattan native and Kansas State art professor Tom Bookwalter created the logo.
