HISTORY
Year Opened: 1922 | Field Surface: Natural Grass
One of the most renowned stadiums in the country, the Rose Bowl was built in 1922 and is most notable for hosting the Rose Bowl game on New Year's Day.
UCLA originally played its home games at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, located across from rival USC, starting in 1928. The Bruins had hoped to build a stadium on their own campus, but poor traffic flow, influential alumni and space restrictions limited options. When the NFL's Oakland Raiders won an antitrust lawsuit against the NFL in 1982 and moved to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, UCLA found the house too crowded for its liking. The Bruins negotiated with Pasadena and moved to the Rose Bowl in 1982.
A National Historic Landmark, the Rose Bowl has hosted five Super Bowls, soccer for the 1984 Olympics and three World Cups. Modeled after the Yale Bowl, the Pasadena venue is undergoing a $152 million renovation to be completed in 2013. Additions include a new press box, wider tunnels, additional concessions and more restrooms.
TRADITIONS
UCLA has generally had bear nicknames and its sports teams began as the Cubs, seen as a younger version of the California Golden Bears. The school adopted Grizzlies in 1923 but changed its nickname to Bruins in 1928 after learning Montana had prior rights to the Grizzlies nickname. The first Bruins mascot was a live bear, but the animal eventually was banned from the Coliseum. UCLA tried other live bears, but cost, care and safety became issues, so the school turned to costumed mascots. Male students played the part of Joe in the mid-1960s, and the first female mascot, Josephine, distinguished by her skirt and bow in her hair, came on the scene in 1967.
The Victory Bell, a 295-pound bell that was used on a Southern Pacific locomotive, was given as a gift to UCLA in 1939. The bell was stolen by USC in 1941 and the act prompted future pranks by both schools. In 1942, the presidents of UCLA and USC agreed the bell would go to the winner of the annual rivalry game between the two football clubs and be kept in the victor's possession for the following year.
