HISTORY
Year Opened: 2003 | Field Surface: Natural Grass
Rentschler Field is located 20 miles west of the Storrs campus in East Hartford, Conn., and opened on Aug. 30, 2003. The Huskies played their games at Memorial Stadium in Storrs from 1953 to 2002. Rentschler Field, or The Rent, is located on a former airfield of the same title and was named after Frederick Brant Rentschler, who founded United Technologies Corp., the Hartford-based outfit that provides technology for the aerospace and building industries. Rentschler Field opened in 1931 and served as a training and testing facility and hosted such notable pilots as Amelia Earhart and Charles Lindbergh.
Rentschler Field is unique in that all parking spots are located on the stadium site and the handicap accessible seating is on the field level.
In addition to UConn football, the stadium has hosted Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones, The Police and other rock acts. The Whalers Hockey Fest was staged here in February 2011. And it is home to the Connecticut High School Coaches Hall of Fame.
TRADITIONS
Until 1933, UConn was know as the Aggies because of the agricultural nature of the school. When the university changed from Connecticut Agricultural College to Connecticut State, the mascot changed to the Statesmen. In 1934, the Husky became the mascot.
Every Huskies mascot is called Jonathan, a tribute to Jonathan Trumbull, governor of Connecticut from 17691784. Jonathan is the only live mascot among Big East teams. A statue of Jonathan is found near Gampel Pavilion and the school's natatorium and is often rubbed for good luck.
After every UConn score, a bell is rung and cheerleaders must tally the same number of push-ups as UConn's score at the time, be it 3 or 43.
