HISTORY

Year Opened: 1973 | Field Surface: Natural Grass

Commonwealth Stadium, the newest stadium in the SEC, opened Sept. 15, 1973, with a capacity of 57,800 and was completed for $12 million. The home of the Wildcats went through a $27.6 million face lift in 1999. Both ends of the stadium were enclosed, adding approximately 10,000 seats, and 40 suites were constructed. Although Commonwealth Stadium now has a seating capacity of 67,942, attendance can exceed 70,000.

The largest crowd in stadium history was 71,024 in 2007 for the Florida game. Kentucky has ranked in the nation's top 25 in attendance every year but one since the 1999 expansion. Additional upgrades in recent years include a new locker room, new playing surface and a state-of-the-art field drainage system. The playing field is named in honor of former athletic director C.M. Newton.

TRADITIONS

The Wildcats adopted blue and white as their official colors in 1892. Originally, however, UK students had decided on blue and light yellow before a game against Centre College on Dec. 19, 1891. The shade of blue, which is close to a royal blue, was chosen when a student asked the question, "What color blue?" At the time, Richard C. Stoll (who lettered in football at UK from 188994) pulled off his necktie and held it up. The students then adopted that particular shade of blue. A year later, the light yellow was dropped in favor of white.

Horse racing and football go hand-in-hand in Kentucky in October, and the official state song, "My Old Kentucky Home," is played after home football games and is more famously played during the post parade of the Kentucky Derby in Louisville. Kentucky began playing October home games at night in 1949 to help accommodate fans who also wanted to attend horse racing at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington during the day. All home October games are played at night expect national and regional TV games.
