Underwear for a comfy workout

Undergarments that stay put, like the ones above from Dear Kate, are crucial for a comfy workout.

Nothing is worse than shifting underwear for breaking your concentration during a workout. While we tend to focus on our outer workout clothes and sport bras, making sure they fit and function well, we don't often pay attention to our underwear. These five pieces are designed to keep you dry and comfortable so that you can focus on your performance rather than your undergarments.

Patagonia Active Hipster ($20)

Patagonia's Active Hipster is great for a range of activities, including running, hiking, skiing, climbing and yoga. The wide, seamless waistband and low-riding style help to keep the underwear in place so it won't ride up or wander. The recycled fabric is soft, lightweight and breathable, so you stay comfortable and dry.

UnderArmour Women's UA Pure Stretch Cheeky ($12)

With super-soft fabric that sits close to the skin and hem-free, tag-free construction, the UA Pure Stretch Cheeky is virtually undetectable, even under your tightest compression tights. The fabric moves with you rather than bunching up. These undergarments incorporate anti-microbial technology. The "cheeky" design offers more coverage than a thong but not quite as much as a brief.

Hanky Panky Signature Lace Original Rise Thong ($20)

We know what you're thinking: a lace thong for working out? But the Hanky Panky Signature Lace Thong is made of soft, stretchy lace. It's comfy, not itchy, and leaves you with no visible panty lines. Hanky Panky thongs come in a variety of rises and colors and feature a flattering V-front and V-back waistband.

Icebreaker Sprite Hot Pants ($34.99)

The Icebreaker Sprite Hot Pant is a cute boy short that also uses an unlikely fabric for underwear -- merino wool. But Icebreaker's merino won't give you an itchy bum. The ultralight merino is combined with a touch of Lycra for a slim fit. Icebreaker's undergarments are made from natural fibers that help make them stink-resistant and breathable, pulling sweat away from your body. Best of all, they're machine washable.

Dear Kate Hazel Sport Hipster Mini ($34)

Having to run to the bathroom mid-workout is a bummer, whether it's "that time of the month" or you've done too many double-unders. Dear Kate underwear is designed to provide a little extra protection. Each pair has a thin fabric liner that protects just like a panty liner so you won't have any embarrassments. The Hazel Sport Hipster Mini is also made of soft, breathable, wicking fabric. The wide sides and full back coverage keep these underthings in place as you run, lift or flow through downward-facing dog.
