Magic number for Serena
Happy 32nd birthday to Serena Williams, who happens to be the owner of 32 Grand Slam titles. Williams won her first Grand Slam singles title at the US Open when she was 17 and won her 17th and most recent Grand Slam singles title at the US Open earlier this month, becoming the oldest women’s champion in the Open Era. In addition to her 17 singles crowns, Williams has won 13 Grand Slam doubles titles and two Grand Slam mixed doubles titles. Martina Navratilova holds the record for most combined Grand Slam titles in the Open Era with 59. Serena has a better shot at catching the singles leaders. Steffi Graf holds the record for most Grand Slam singles titles in the Open Era with 22, and Chris Evert and Navratilova are tied for second at 18. It won’t be easy for Serena to say goodbye to 31. During the year, she became the first woman to win more than $9 million in a single season and surpassed the $50 million mark for her career.
