Sweet preparation for US Open
A lot has happened since I last checked in with you this summer. One huge event was Stanford, where I made it to the finals -- that's where it all began. It was really nice to be in Northern California this time of year because the weather was perfect, and it helped me acclimatize to the U.S. summer after being in Poland.
Then I went on to Carlsbad and the Omni La Costa resort near San Diego -- wow, what a place! There's hardly a more beautiful stop on tour. I made the quarterfinals there, which kept my momentum going on the road to the US Open. My sister, Ula, also made the quarterfinals, so I was proud and happy to watch her as well.
There's also a competition called the Emirates Airline US Open Series Bonus Challenge, which awards points for all the tournaments before the US Open. It's a type of playoff, much like the FedExCup series in golf. For a while, Urszula and I were tied for second in the Bonus Challenge, which was pretty cool. Then I was slightly in the lead -- just ahead of Serena [Williams] -- and now I'm in third, while Ula is tied for 14th.
My sister and I moved on to Toronto after Carlsbad. I can tell you that is a cool city. I did some juggling in the Xerox booth -- check it out. Maybe I should stick to tennis! On court at the Rogers Cup, I had a really good week, beating Sara Errani in the quarterfinal before I played Serena in the semis. It was a close match; I lost 7-6 (3), 6-4, but I feel like I'm playing really well heading toward the Open, which is almost here.
This week I've been in New Haven, where my sister was going to play before coming down with an illness. I took the week off, too, because I wanted to be 100 percent fit for next week. New Haven is a great place for me to tune up for Flushing Meadows without all the stress and hustle and bustle of Manhattan. There are lots of quiet coffee shops where I can sit and read and pretend I'm a student at Yale.
I'm going to New York City today for all of my media and partner engagements. The thing I'm most looking forward to is enjoying my new relationship with the Cheesecake Factory. If you've been following this blog closely, you know I'm their biggest fan! The first thing we are doing together is appearing at the BNP Paribas Taste of Tennis, where I'll be putting on my chef's hat and serving dessert to all the players and VIPs. It's going to be so cool. If it doesn't work out with tennis, maybe that will be my backup plan …
