Hats off to Hoyas
By Lizzie Haldane
On this day in 1789, Georgetown University was founded, becoming home to several noteworthy women in the sports world. Nancy Hogshead-Makar, a three-time gold and one-time silver medalist in swimming at the 1984 Los Angeles Games, graduated from Georgetown University Law Center. She went on to become one of the foremost experts in gender equity and Title IX and is the former president of the Women’s Sports Foundation. Others who have ties to Georgetown include Susan O’Malley, former president of the Washington Wizards and the first and only female president of an NBA franchise; Rebekkah Brunson, the first Georgetown player to be selected in the first round of the WNBA draft; and Ingrid Wells, a U-23 U.S. women's national soccer team player who also plays for Goteborg FC.
