Recalling a milestone in a legendary career
By Lizzie Haldane
On this day in 2009, legendary women’s basketball coach Pat Summitt won her 1,000th game during her 35th season at Tennessee with a 73-43 victory over Georgia. To mark the milestone, Tennessee announced that Summitt had signed a new contract through the 2014 season. Summitt, however, retired last April and finished her career with a total of 1,098 wins -- more than any man or woman in major-college basketball -- and a remarkable eight national championships with the Lady Vols.
