TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- A judge has denied bond to a former Florida A&M University band member charged in the hazing death of drum major Robert Champion.

Circuit Judge Frank Sheffield rejected the request Wednesday from Caleb Jackson. Jackson has been jailed on a charge of violating probation for a battery conviction arising from a fight since his arrest on the hazing charge three months ago.

Defense lawyer Chuck Hobbs said Jackson is the only one of 13 defendants in the hazing case who has been denied bail. Jackson awaits scheduled trial in October.

Champion died last November after being beaten aboard a bus in Orlando, Fla., where the band had gone for a football game.

The death resulted in the suspension of the nationally famous marching band and the resignation of the university's president.
