The University of Texas-Pan American has received an invitation from the Western Athletic Conference and is expected to join the league next season.
"We received an invite to the WAC early last week," UTPA athletic director Chris King told TheMonitor.com.
Texas-Pan American is currently a member of the Great West Conference.
Next season the WAC also will add Grand Canyon University, which is transitioning from Division II to Division I.
The WAC, gutted by defections, no longer will exist as a Division I football conference after this season.
However, interim WAC commissioner Jeff Hurd previously told ESPN that his league would continue to be a Division I conference in other sports besides football.
