TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Two Florida State track athletes, including a former Olympian, have been suspended indefinitely for their alleged involvement in an incident involving gunfire Thursday.
Sprinters Stephen Newbold and Josh Mance both face charges relating to the incident. Newbold was charged with firing a gun within the city limits while Mance was charged with resisting arrest and providing a fake ID, according to Tallahassee police. The story was first reported by the Tallahassee Democrat.
Both athletes have been suspended indefinitely from the program, according to Florida State athletic director Randy Spetman.
"We are aware of the arrests and are working to gather all the facts," Spetman said in a statement released by the school. "The students have been suspended from the team, effective immediately. Whether they can return as student-athletes will be determined through our discipline policy and any legal proceedings."
Newbold, who is from the Bahamas, was the 2012 ACC indoor track freshman of the year. Mance, a transfer from USC, was a member of the U.S. men's 4x400-meter relay that won the silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics.
