MLB: The Indians, who traded four minor leaguers to grab Colorado starter Ubaldo Jimenez, will take on the Red Sox, who acquired Seattle lefty Erik Bedard in a three-team trade. Both pitchers will be in the dugout, not on the mound, tonight, as the series opener pits John Lackey against Josh Tomlin (7:10 p.m.). ... The Pirates are usually sellers at the trade deadline, but this year, within striking distance of the division lead, became buyers. This weekend they acquired Derrek Lee from Baltimore then snagged Ryan Ludwick from the Padres. Lee is expected to play today against another former team, the Chicago Cubs, while Ludwick may not suit up until tomorrow (7:05 p.m.).

The Braves hope new acquisition Michael Bourn will be as effective against the Nationals in an Atlanta jersey as he was in an Astros uni. Since 2009, Bourn has hit safely in 12-of-13 games against Washington, with a .316 average and 11 RBI, tied for his most against any opponent. Jair Jurrjens will take the bump for the Braves opposite Livan Hernandez (7:05 p.m.). ... CC Sabathia will vie for his major-league leading 16th win tonight as his Yankees open up a four-game set against the White Sox. Chicago may be without slugger Paul Konerko, who is day-to-day with a bruised calf, while New York may lose Derek Jeter for a few days after he was hit in the hand with a pitch against Baltimore yesterday (8:10 p.m.).

Two Cy Young award winners will face off in Milwaukee tonight when the Brewers' Zack Greinke takes on the Cardinals' Chris Carpenter. The Brewers hold a two and a half game lead over the Cards in the NL Central (8:10 p.m.). ... The best team in the majors got better over the weekend, as the Phillies picked up Hunter Pence from the Astros. Tonight Pence and his new team visit the Rockies for the first of a three-game set. Cole Hamels will take on Jhoulys Chacin, who is 0-4 with a 5.82 ERA over his last six starts (8:40 p.m.).

NFL: The NFL free-agent frenzy began last week but deals became official on Friday, when veteran free agents were allowed to sign on the dotted line. After a busy weekend, some of the league's biggest names have new homes, while some are still looking. Expect the signings to continue right up to Thursday, when veteran free agents are finally allowed to suit up and practice.
