Sibling rivalries
Samantha and
Buster Posey
Samantha, 22, is a third baseman for Valdosta State's softball team. Buster, 25, is a catcher for the San Francisco Giants.
It's easy to assume Buster Posey shaped his sister's game. Girl follows big brother to Little League field, then studies his batting stance and how his knee always makes contact with the clay when he fields a grounder. But what of the way Sam influenced Buster, not to mention their two brothers? "No brother wants to be outshined by his sister," Samantha says. "So if I was doing better than they were, they'd get picked on by the other guys. Me doing well pushed them." After she turned a bunt and bad throw into an inside-the-park home run, her dad began teasingly comparing her slower-footed brothers to their lightning-fast sib. Alas, that didn't last. "I'm known as Buster Posey's sister," Samantha says. But she still finds a way to stand out. Like the time last year she hit four homers in a game against Albany State and ended up on "SportsCenter." Suddenly, reporters were asking Buster about her. "The guys gave me a hard time because I had two homers all year," Buster says. "And she had four in one day."
