Sibling rivalries

Holley and
Nick Mangold

Holley, 22, is a member of the U.S. Olympic weightlifting team and a former high school football player. Nick, 28, plays center for the New York Jets.

The summer before her senior year at Archbishop Alter High School in Kettering, Ohio, Holley Mangold needed brotherly advice. As the starting right guard on Alter's varsity football team, Holley was the first girl in Ohio prep history to play on the line of scrimmage. But on this day, she was struggling badly, feeling tired and out of shape during training camp. In fact, she wasn't sure she could make it through one more practice. So she called Nick, then a second-year center with the Jets, and asked him how he kept going when he didn't think he could. "He told me, 'Sometimes you gotta do the things you don't want to do, to get the results you want,'" Holley says. Simple as it sounds, that's when Holley realized she had credited too much of Nick's success to raw talent. "My brother works so hard, and that finally rubbed off on me," Holley says. After high school, she took up weightlifting at Ursuline College. Her goal was to compete in the 2016 Summer Olympics, but things didn't go quite as planned. She made the 2012 team instead.
