WNBA star Sheryl Swoopes is born in Brownfield, Texas. Swoopes was one of the first players drafted by the WNBA to play professionally. She helped lead the Houston Comets to a "four-peat" of consecutive championships in 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000, and she also won three Olympic Gold Medals. Swoops raised the profile of women's basketball on and off the court and is considered to be one of the greatest collegiate and pro players of all time. Swoopes is also the first female athlete to have a shoe named after her, Nike's Air Swoopes.
