DENVER (AP) _ Jeffrey Hammonds hit his second career grand slam and Scott Karl made a respectable bid to stay in Colorado's starting rotation as the Rockies beat the Montreal Expos 12-6 Tuesday night.

Mike Lansing, Brent Mayne and Tom Goodwin also homered for the Rockies, who have hit 15 in their last four games. They had 17 in their first 23 games.

With right-hander Rolando Arrojo set to come off the disabled list later this week, Karl (1-2) is fighting with Brian Bohanon to remain in the Colorado rotation.

Staked to a 7-0 lead after three innings, Karl gave up four runs and nine hits in six innings. The Rockies pounded Jeremy Powell (0-2) for eight runs and nine hits in 3 1-3 innings.

Powell, 0-3 with a 15.63 ERA in three career starts against Colorado, created his own problems when he issued consecutive walks to Larry Walker, Jeff Cirillo and Todd Helton with two outs in the first.

Hammonds fell behind in the count 0-2, then hit a fastball an estimated 428 feet to left-center field. His only other grand slam came May 23, 1998, at Oakland while playing for Baltimore.

Lansing hit a two-run homer in the second, and Goodwin added a solo shot that just cleared the left-field wall in the third.

Montreal chipped away on RBI singles by Jose Vidro and Rondell White in the fourth and fifth. Lee Stevens added an RBI double in the sixth and scored on Wilton Guerrero's pinch-hit single to make it 8-4.

Colorado added four runs in the eighth highlighted by Mayne's two-run homer, his first with the Rockies. Montreal's Trace Coquillette hit his first career homer in the ninth.

Notes: Cirillo extended his hitting streak to 10 games. ... Goodwin has three homers in 88 at-bats. He had three in 405 at-bats all of last season. ... Montreal C Chris Widger, who hit two solo homers Monday night, did not play Tuesday because of soreness between his right thumb and index finger. ... Powell was called up from Triple-A Ottawa on Tuesday. ... The Expos are 0-8 when trailing after seven.
