SAN DIEGO (AP) _ Damian Jackson's tiebreaking double was one of
four extra-base hits in the seventh inning for the San Diego
Padres, who blew a five-run lead and then rallied to beat the
Milwaukee Brewers 9-5 Wednesday night. The Padres won their third straight series to finish the
homestand 7-2. They went 2-1 against the Brewers and the New York
Mets, and swept Montreal. David Weathers (3-2) allowed doubles by Carlos Hernandez,
Jackson and pinch-hitter Dave Magadan opening the seventh, then was
chased by Rivera's two-run triple. The Padres drew 12 walks, three intentional, to tie the club
record for a nine-inning game. It was the third time they've had
that many, first since Sept. 7, 1980, against San Francisco. The 12
walks were two short of the Brewers' record, set April 29 against
Houston. After Hernandez doubled to the left-center gap, Jackson followed
with a double to right that hit a divot and took an odd hop past
Jeromy Burnitz, allowing Hernandez to score the go-ahead run. Carlos Almanzar (1-1) faced one batter for the win, getting Jose
Hernandez to ground into a force play to end the seventh with the
bases loaded. Milwaukee's Geoff Jenkins went 4-for-4 _ all singles _ to tie
his career high, drove in a run and scored once. Rodrigo Lopez was trying to become the second San Diego pitcher
in as many nights to get his first major league victory, but once
again was burned by his bullpen. The 24-year-old Lopez was making his fourth big league start. In
his debut on April 29 against Atlanta, he left with a 4-1 lead
after seven innings, only to watch the bullpen blow the lead and
the game as the Padres lost 7-4 in 12 innings. The Padres scored four runs in the fifth to stake Lopez to a 5-0
lead. Milwaukee came back with four in the sixth, the first three
allowed by Lopez, and reliever Brian Boehringer then allowed a
tying homer by the first batter he faced, Raul Casanova, leading
off the seventh. Casanova, a former Padres farmhand, homered to right on a 3-2
fastball. It was his first homer since July 16, 1998, against the
New York Yankees while he was with Detroit. On Tuesday night, San Diego's Adam Eaton beat Milwaukee 6-3 in
his major league debut. The Padres led 1-0 going into the fifth inning, when they scored
four runs on three hits and three walks. After leadoff batter Eric
Owens lined out to second, six straight Padres reached base. Phil
Nevin had an RBI single and Ryan Klesko an RBI double before Bret
Boone walked to load the bases and chase Snyder. Steve Woodard came on and walked Hernandez on four straight
pitches to force in a run, and Damian Jackson hit a sacrifice fly
to make it 5-0. Jenkins' RBI single in the sixth chased Lopez, and reliever Matt
Whiteside allowed Jose Hernandez's RBI fielder's choice and Marquis
Grissom's two-run double to pull the Brewers to 5-4. Milwaukee starter John Snyder walked seven and allowed five runs
_ four earned _ on four hits. He struck out two. Notes: The Brewers activated RHP Curtis Leskanic from the 15-day
disabled list and sent RHP Hector Ramirez outright to Triple-A
Indianapolis. Leskanic had been on the DL since May 17 with a groin
injury. ... Duane Espy made his debut as Padres hitting coach
Wednesday night. He replaces Ben Oglivie, who was demoted on
Tuesday to the Padres' team in the Arizona Rookie League. ...
Padres RHP Carlton Loewer is scheduled to make his second rehab
assignment Thursday at Single-A Rancho Cucamonga against San
Bernardino. Loewer broke his left ankle when he fell out of a deer
blind in January. He's expected to join the rotation in mid-June.
