COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (AP) -- C.C. Sabathia pitched well in the Hall
of Fame Game on Monday, but maybe not well enough to earn a spot in
the Cleveland Indians rotation.
Long after he left, the Arizona Diamondbacks rallied with six
runs in the eighth inning to beat Cleveland 12-7 Monday in the
annual exhibition scheduled at Doubleday Field on induction
weekend.
Sabathia, the Indians' top prospect, struck out four in three
innings, allowing three hits and two walks. He gave up a three-run
homer to Greg Colbrunn in the first inning.
"He's got good stuff. I like his stuff, especially when he's
down," Cleveland manager Charlie Manuel said. "He still needs to
be polished up."
Sabathia is 3-3 with a 3.51 ERA in nine Double-A starts, and
represented Cleveland in the all-star futures game. Asked if he
would call up the left-hander, Manuel said, "I don't know. I'm
going to think about that."
It was 6-6 in the eighth when Arizona rallied for six runs.
Luis Terrero, who also made two great catches in center, singled
and Craig Counsell blooped a hit over the head of third baseman
Richie Sexson. Danny Klassen followed with a bouncer over the head
of the 6-foot-7 Sexson to make it 7-6.
After Erubiel Durazo walked, Kane Davis relieved and gave up a
two-run single to Alex Cabrera. Chip Sell doubled off the
left-field fence to make it 10-6, and Damian Miller singled to
drive in two more.
