BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox retired Jim Rice's No. 14 on Tuesday night. Then the Oakland Athletics went out and hit like him.
Adam Kennedy had a career-high five of the A's season-high 21 hits, and Mark Ellis had four as Oakland rallied from a three-run deficit against Jonathan Papelbon to beat Boston 9-8 in 11 innings.Ellis -- Oakland's No. 14 -- also scored four times, including the tying run in the ninth and the go-ahead run in the 11th. Both times he was singled in by Rajai Davis.Fast Facts
• The A's victory in the 11th inning ended a four-game losing skid in extra-inning games for Oakland
• In their first 90 games, the A's didn't have an 18-hit game; they've reached at least 18 hits in three of their last nine games (21 on Tuesday).
• Jonathan Papelbon blew the save, just the second time in his career he's blown a three-run lead (September 2007 vs. the Yankees). However, it was the first time he's blown a save in which three runs were charged to him.
