Jim Caple: Royals 4, Giants 1

Ryan Vogelsong had a rough time in the third despite not getting hit very hard. K.C. had a couple infield singles, including one by Eric Hosmer when Vogelsong failed to cover first base quickly with two out. Vogelsong was visibly upset with himself on that play and it appeared to carry over to the next batter when he walked Mike Moustakas to load the bases. He then gave up two singles to make it 4-1.

Salvador Perez's RBI single put the Royals up 4-1 and knocked Ryan Vogelsong out of the game as Bruce Bochy calls to Jean Machi from the bullpen.

Omar Infante singles up the middle to drive in two KC runs and the Royals have a 3-1 edge in the third.

Royals 1, Giants 1

Eric Hosmer hit a slow roller to Joe Panik that scored Alex Gordon and evened the game at one.

Jim Caple: Vargas Can Hit

Jason Vargas has a career .262 batting average and he showed he's no pushover by working Ryan Voglesong to a 3-2 count before flying out to medium-deep center field to lead off the third. But Billy Butler still maintains there should be a constitutional amendment requiring the DH.

Jim Caple: Vogey Looking Good

Ryan Vogelsong has not been particularly effective the past two seasons (12-19, 4.62 ERA and 1.38 WHIP). But he's in control tonight, allowing two singles on bleeders and throwing 22 strikes in 27 pitches. Bruce Bochy's decision to not start Madison Bumgarner on short rest is looking good.

Jim Caple: Giants 1, Royals 0

The Giants take a 1-0 lead by playing Royals ball. Gregor Blanco led off with a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and stole third. After Joe Panik popped out, Buster Posey worked a walk despite being behind 0-2 in the count. Then Hunter Pence beat out a double-play ball to third to score Blanco.

Jim Caple: The Duel is on

The first inning of the epic Ryan Vogelsong vs. Jason Vargas pitchers' duel has begun. Vogelsong struck out two in the top half of the first while Vargas walked the first batter in the the bottom. Already, the Twitter-verse is probably ripping Ned Yost for starting Vargas.

Giants strike first in the first. Hunter Pence hit an RBI-groundout that scores Gregor Blanco.
