BOONE, N.C. -- D.J. Mason scored 19 points and Darius Leonard added 16 as Campbell beat Appalachian State 73-66 Tuesday night.

The Fighting Camels (2-0) shot 49 percent from the field and jumped out to an early 23-7 lead capped off by a 3-pointer from Mason.

The Mountaineers (0-2) chipped at the deficit throughout the second half and used an 11-0 surge to pull within four. Chris Burgess fueled the run, hitting a jumper, a layup and a 3-pointer, and Tab Hamilton hit a triple as well to put Appalachian State in reach with 2:22 remaining.

Campbell cut the rally short as Andrew Ryan and Leek Leek each sunk two late free throws to hold off the comeback.

Ryan finished with 14 points and Quinton Ray dished out a game-high seven assists.

Mike Neal paced the Mountaineers with 20 points and Michael Obacha added seven with 15 rebounds.
