CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Tristan Carey scored a season-high 37 points as Longwood edged Charleston Southern 88-85 on Saturday.
Carey shot 13 of 21 from the field -- including 7 of 10 from beyond the arc -- as Longwood (7-14, 2-4 Big South) was 57.4 percent on field goals. Karl Ziegler added 16 points for Longwood and Lucas Woodhouse scored 13 and had 10 assists.
Longwood trailed by as many as 12 in the first half and didn't take its first lead until less than 16 minutes left in the second. Charleston Southern (9-10, 3-3) twice got within a point in the final 30 seconds but missed a potential game-tying 3 in the waning seconds.
Matt Kennedy led Charleston Southern with 28 points, shooting 10 of 12 from the field. Charleston Southern scored 53 first-half points but cooled off in the second, where they had 32.
