Fairleigh Dickinson upsets Seton Hall 58-54

    Associated Press

NEWARK, N.J. -- Point guard Sidney Sanders scored 23 points and handed out nine assists in leading Fairleigh Dickinson to a 58-54 upset victory over Seton Hall on Sunday afternoon at the Prudential Center.

Sanders sank two free throws with 20.2 seconds showing for a 57-54 lead and added one foul shot with five seconds left to seal it. Scooter Gillette, who made a big block down the stretch, ended with 15 points for FDU (3-6), which has defeated in-state New Jersey colleges, Rutgers and Seton Hall in consecutive games.

It was just the fourth victory for FDU against Seton Hall in 21 meetings, the last coming in 2006.

Fuquan Edwin had 16 points and Brian Oliver netted 12 for Seton Hall (4-3).

Gillette's block of Brandon Mobley's shot in the paint preserved a 55-54 lead and led to the two foul shots by Sanders.

Sanders drove for a layup and then fed Mathias Seilund for a 3-pointer to give FDU a 55-51 lead with 2:13 to go.

Sanders and Gillette fueled a 9-3 burst that put FDU ahead, 42-36, with 10:20 showing. Gillette drove the baseline for a dunk and converted a three-point play while Sanders hit two foul shots and a layup in the run.

Seton Hall had taken its first lead of the second half when Edwin drained a 3-pointer from the corner and Brandon Mobley threw down a one-handed dunk off an offensive board to give the Hall a 27-26 edge. FDU answered with seven quick points -- a Sanders fast-break layup, a Gillette jumper and Seilund's 3-pointer -- to regain a 33-27 lead with 16:35 to go.

Brian Oliver's 3-pointer and a three-point play by Eugene Teague had evened it up at 33-33 for the Pirates.

A 13-4 run by FDU in the first half gave the Knights an 18-10 lead. Sanders had nine points, six assists and three steals as FDU took a 26-22 advantage into the break.
