The Scotiabank Saddledome, or just the Saddledome or Dome, was built to host the Flames, who had moved from Atlanta in 1980, and was a key in Calgary being awarded the 1988 Winter Olympics. It was the first building in North America that had the larger international ice surface, according to the team. The building was opened as the Olympic Saddledome and later the Canadian Airlines Saddledome and Pengrowth Saddledome. The Saddledome is located in Stampede Park, host to the Calgary Stampede rodeo, but the reason for its saddle shape was more to allow for better viewing and didn't follow a Western motif, according to the team. Still, the building's unique concave design has earned many architectural and engineering awards. The Flames' first arena in Calgary, the Corral, is next door. The Scotiabank Saddledome has various displays and exhibits, including ones honoring the 1988-89 Stanley Cup champion team. The Saddledome has hosted other international skating events and a visit from Queen Elizabeth II in 2005. In addition to the Flames, the Saddledome hosts the Hitmen of the Western Hockey League and the National Lacrosse League's Calgary Roughnecks.
