KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Matt McKeon scored his first goal of the
season to lift the Kansas City Wizards into a 1-1 tie against the
Dallas Burn on Saturday night.
The Wizards (5-5-6) scored first in the 52nd minute when Dallas
goalkeeper D.J. Countess deflected a shot directly into the path of
McKeon, who scored.
The Burn (7-3-6) tied it 10 minutes later on Ronald Cerritos'
goal. Bobby Rhine charged down the right side of the Wizards'
penalty box, crossing the ball in front of the goal. Wizards'
goalkeeper Tony Meola dived for the ball, but missed the save by
inches as the ball rolled directly to Cerritos, who tapped it into
the goal.
The Western Division rivals had struggled through a muggy
93-degree heat in a scoreless first half.
Preki, who led the Wizards with two shots on goal in the first
45 minutes, nearly won it for Kansas City in the 78th minute with a
powerful curling shot from just inside the right corner of the Burn
penalty box. But the ball missed the goal by inches, bouncing off
of the crossbar and out of bounds.
The Wizards are 0-2-6 in overtime games this season.
