According to sources, Colin Kaepernick is about to sign a six-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers worth more than $110 million -- with a record $61 million guaranteed. It's hard to argue with the team's success under the soon-to-be-fourth-year man, but where does he rank among his young quarterbacking peers?

Jets extend Rex Ryan

Rex Ryan will get another shot at bringing a Lombardi trophy to New York, as the Jets extended his contract through the 2016 season on Thursday. Ryan has had moments where the Jets have seemingly figured it all out, but he's been unable to build them into a consistent championship competitor. His coaching acumen was on full display this season, however -- despite a number of injuries and the struggles of rookie QB Geno Smith, Ryan led the Jets to a .500 record. He'll have to do better than that in the seasons to come if he wants to remain in New York for too much longer.

Is Geno Smith out of chances?

Some fans celebrated Mark Sanchez's injury as a chance for the Jets to begin again with Geno Smith, but so far, Smith has shown a very Sanchez-like predilection for throwing interceptions. Smith lasted only a single quarter in the Jets' loss to the Dolphins on Sunday, and though he's been told he'll be the starter for next week's matchup against the Raiders, we wouldn't fault Rex Ryan for thinking long and hard on that decision -- the Jets are (amazingly) still in playoff contention, and a few more wins could mean a lot for Ryan's job security next season.

Should the Jets stick with Smith?

Someday the Jets will find a quarterback who isn't in the habit of throwing several interceptions a game. At least for now, that quarterback isn't Geno Smith. The rookie threw two more interceptions in a 19-3 loss to the Ravens, giving him 18 on the season. The Jets seem to be sticking with Smith for now, and they're still in contention for a wild-card spot in a weak field, but is it worth letting Smith continue to throw picks as he works out the kinks?
